All jokes aside, hurricanes can be detrimental to both homes and communities. A Category 1 hurricane, the lowest ranking and least lethal ranking, will still produce winds of up to 95 miles per hour. Needless to say, it can do more than just take down a few branches and causes large waves. It can destroy your home. That being said, it is incredibly important to be prepared for hurricane season. Here are a few ways to keep your home safe during this year’s season.

Stay Informed

First and foremost, to best protect your home, you have to know ahead of time when the hurricane is going to hit. Thanks to modern technology, we can know pretty much the exact time the weather will shift for the worst. Stay diligent on keeping up with the news and turn weather alerts on your smart phone if possible.

Take Everything Inside

We live in Florida, which means we like to spend a lot of time lounging outdoors. Your outdoor furniture and decorations are going to be the most susceptible to getting damaged in a hurricane. Bring lightweight and/or breakable items indoors, and make sure your cushions are out of the rain’s way.

Board and Lock

Make sure all of your doors and windows are securely locked. The wind can and will rip them open otherwise. Luckily, most windows in Florida are considered to be hurricane resistant. That being said, if they are not, invest in storm shutters or an upgrade to keep your home safe. It is without a doubt worth the investment.

Have a Plan

This step seems obvious but should not be taken lightly. Without a plan, most are prone to panic in threatening situations. It is why we do things such as practice fire drills or go over safety instructions before taking off on a plane. So, make a plan for what your family will do in the event of a hurricane. Be ready for power outages, closed roads, and even a possible evacuation.

July 1st marks the starts of Florida’s favorite time of year… hurricane season.
