February is Black History Month, and it is just as important as ever to support Black-owned businesses. According to the 2019 census, only 4.7% of Sarasota County identifies as being Black or of African descent, while 91.5% is white. With the community being predominantly white, it is pertinent to make an extra effort to support these businesses. Here a just a few highlighted, along with some links that showcase even more Black-owned businesses in the Sarasota and Bradenton areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

G\u2019s Southern Kitchen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chef Gordon, better known as Chef G, has been serving mouth-watering soul food for the past five years in Sarasota. His famous fried chicken has even been renamed, \u201cfriend chicken,\u201d because it\u2019s bound to become your best friend after only one bite! G\u2019s Southern Kitchen is located in Sarasota\u2019s Bobby Jones Golf Club, and even if you live over in Lakewood Ranch is well worth the drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ionie \u2013 Organic, Vegan Raw Food<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My daughter is a vegan and insisted I put this one on my list because of how delicious she says it is. She promised me that you would not even know you are eating vegan with most of the menu. She also told me to mention that if you go, you absolutely have to get the cheesecake. Ionie is located on Fruitville Road near the St. Armand\u2019s bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

West Coast Black Theatre Troupe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is no surprise to the residents of the Sarasota and Bradenton area that we as a community take pride in our support of the fine arts. The West Coast Black Theatre Troupe is the only Black theatre troupe on the west coast of Florida. COVID-19 has detrimentally impacted the arts, but this troupe has persevered by continuing to produce entertainment. Right now, you can watch, while socially distanced, their hit \u201cLight Up the Night,\u201d an open-air concert series.
